The joy of making art in the South Hams, Devon, UK
March 2023
A small, but growing, collection of art inspired by an all too short visit
I had the good fortune to spend a lovely week during April in the South Hams, Devon some time ago.
Hoping for inspiration for Devon paintings and prints as a completely new visiter to the area, I found it 'in spades'*An idiom meaning 'a lot'.
I was based near Torcross and the oasis of calm that is the fragile and beautiful Slapton Ley – so many swans!
In a short time, I covered the area pretty well in my mission to reconnoitre for future art making. From Coleton Fishacre on the North side of the River Dart at Dartmouth, to Bantham Beach and Burgh Island in the West, taking in Start Point on the way.
The weather was exceptionally kind to me all week despite how early in the year it was. So I can confidently say I explored widely, walking some sections of the South West Coast Path at times.
An intense, all too short week sketching and collecting reference materials to base further painting trips on – chance would be a fine thing with the way things are (The cost of living skyrocketing mainly).
I returned home to North Yorkshire with a whole heap of initial ideas for paintings and prints to think about and plan more artistic forays.
Alas, I've not managed to go back so far and the ideas have lain untouched for too long. I've recently completed two ideas though which I'll be uploading here once I've got over the worst of upgrading this website.
