A painting on an easel high on cliffs looks out across a blue bay
This place has inpired a lot of my art over the years - Flamborough Head

Landscape Art by Location

All my art is inspired by somewhere…

'Somewhere' is mostly Yorkshire, because I'm based here, but other 'somewheres' include Northumbria and Devon.

Some of these collections are very small, but all of them are growing

Yorkshire

Bridlington & Flamborough

Painting of Martins near Dane's Dyke in July

Bridlington North & South Beach, its harbour; Flamborough Head, Dane's Dyke and Bempton Cliffs.

Visit Brid

Whitby & Scarborough

Studio painting of Whitby Harbour from the east cliff above

Two classic seaside towns on the Yorkshire Coast.

Whitby & Scarborough

North York Moors

Moorland linocut print

Bilsdale, Hole of Horcum & Roseberry Topping to name a few.

North York Moors

Yorkshire Wolds

A road passing down a dale through the soft hills dotted with sheep

A few of the well known walking areas like Millington Dale and Thixendale, and it's many ancient places.

About this art project

York & Harrogate

Detail of an plein-air painting of York race course

Green spaces in these cities, but my history as an architectural illustrator will mean cityscapes too.

Yorkshire Dales

A sketch of a classic Dales scene with stone barns

Lots of plans for this wonderful area. Hoping to develop a large collection here in future.

Exotic lands beyond Yorkshire

Bamburgh Castle

Acrylic painting of Bamburgh Castle seen from the North

See all paintings and prints of Bamburgh Castle completed so far. A collection, like all the others, that will grow.

Castles by the sea

South Hams, Devon

An idea for a painting, and a print, and another painting!

A small collection of South Hams inspired art. I've not managed to go back [ sad face ].

The South Hams

Other somewheres

Detail of a studio painting of a misty morning

Miscellaneous, random and just plain odd scenes that insisted I make something.

Go nowhere in particular

Type of landscape

Green City spaces

One of the strays in the city of York

I'm fascinated with painting green spaces in cities, and am shaping a series exploring the subject. This one was painted on a very wet 'stray' in early March, and I think it's captured it.

Collection published soon

Seascapes

Detail of a linocut with a big wave crashing toward us

A book on painting seascapes I happened across in my local library gripped me for months when I was young. Ever since, seascapes have fascinated me, and my first sell‑out linocut print was a seascape.

Away to sea

Hills and dales

Painting on an easel infront of a view of a valley

Valleys in Yorkshire are called dales, whether they're in The Dales or elsewhere. Hill subjects are always a winner.

Coastal Cliffs

Outdoor painting of Thornwick Bay cliffs

I spent much of 2022 painting the Yorkshire coast before the crowds became too much (I'll be back). This project has sparked so many ideas, it's about ready to move into the studio big time.

Trees & Gardens

Detail of a painting of a large green house with plants in front

I don't know what it is about trees that makes them so satisfying to paint especially. As for gardens, well, what's not to like about painting in a garden, though they're more challenging than you'd think.

Call in again - links to these landscape types will be here in future.
