Creating “Lighthouse” linocut
Original Print – Linocut on Paper
Both the landscape and the sky, swirl and cascade through this fluid lighthouse linocut print, as though it's all ocean. The lighthouse, a symbol of hope, stands tall amidst it all.
I'm always collecting reference material with the aim of making more lighthouse prints in future. I've visited several with this in mind, including Strumble Head Lighthouse in Pembrokeshire, and St Mary's Lighthouse in Whitley Bay for example.
I'm busy filling sketchbooks with ideas for making lighthouse art, similar to this one. It's never just about the lighthouse, of course, because the terrain where these beacons are found is always rugged. So there's always several subjects in these locations for good landscape art.
This wall art is a three lino block original print, developed from a single artist's proof (now in a private collection). The earlier print was previously on display, and commended, in an art exhibition held at Scarborough Art Gallery, Yorkshire, UK.
Both the artist's proof and this edition were inspired by Flamborough Head lighthouse on the Yorkshire coast, UK.
While modern in style, this print is an example of traditional printmaking. It was made without plugs, or on/off switches.
This lighthouse print proved a popular subject and quickly sold out, leaving some people disappointed. This is the thing about limited editions, once they're sold, they're gone.
There's usually at least one plein air painting of Flamborough Head available.
