Creating “Coast” linocut
Original Print – Linocut on Paper
A deceptively simple stylish coastal scene print. A reduction-cut linocut in a modern contemporary style.
I love the coast, whether rocky, sandy, cliffs or beaches. Clearly others share this love too, because this lino art has proved very popular.
I've begun to make a series of coastal scenes similar to this, all in this modern style. This wall art is quite small. Despite this, it's a bold and striking linocut, and that's before it's framed. Add a mount and a wide moulding, and it's surprising how big a small work of art can end up. It'll easily double in size.
The printmaking technique used for this landscape art is called 'reduction cut'. It involves using only one block of lino throughout the whole process of printing the edition.
A single block of lino is cut away a little more after each colour is printed - so there is no room for mistakes! A traditional technique – a contemporary coastal scene.
